Q: Can basements be covered by hardwood flooring?

I have a three story cabin including my basement. Lake Tahoe has fabulous weather for the particular seasons. We are looking to put a game room and theater in the basement but I am worried abou the concrete subfloors and moisture affecting the chosen flooring. Any suggestions?

A:

Yes...

1. If there is adequate ventilation.
2. If the substrate is completely sealed off from moisture migration and, or normal to severe vapor-emission. This includes cracks and control joints.
3. If the room cavity is regulated to within manufactures guidelines for temperature and humidity before installation, during, and forever after.
4. No additional cavity as an additional raised area made of wood over concrete.
5. Substrates should not produce adverse temperatures to attached wood.

A:

Solid wood flooring cannot be installed below grade. If you want wood in your basement go with an engineered floor. They come in a variety of widths and styles pre finished or unfinished. As with all wood flooring you will need to keep a relative humidty within the manufacturers guidelines as well using a good moisture barrier. I recommend Easy Step.
