Q: What are some good color choices for dining rooms?

My husband and I are looking to liven up our house with some new paint (the perfect "remodel" for tough times - nice and affordable : ) ). What are some good vibrant colors for dining rooms? I would love to hear some ideas from decorating professionals. I'd also be interested to know why you think that color is great for dining rooms.

Thanks for your help. Know that your advice will help us brighten our days!

If vibrant, "liven up" colors are what you're aiming for, I would say go for orangey tones. Anything in the orange spectrum, from yellow-orange to red-orange, looks nice, warm, and can be both vibrant or muted. It is a very "awake" color, and in color psychology, orange is the color said to stimulate appetite- perfect for dining areas!

Dining areas are places where we linguer and spend a lot of 'face' time, so you want to paint your dining room in a flattering color. Reds are a very popular pick as they make people and food look good. Any shade of red, but especially earthy tones create a cosy and welcoming atmsophere.
You want to stay away from greens, as they make people look sickly, not the look we are going for for our next dinner party!

A: Good Colors to Paint Your Dining Room

As a Professional Color consultant I have worked with many clients helping them choose colors for their dining areas. I always ask how they like to use the room, what kind of atmosphere do they want to create, what colors make them feel good, do they entertain a lot, etc.... The colors we choose for their dining room are based on what look and mood they want to create. If you would like to entertain, stimulate conversation and have colors which increase appetite, reds and oranges are the best colors to choose. Both of those colors increase appetite, energy, create stimulation and create a very warm and inviting environment. There are thousands of reds and oranges from more muted to more vibrant tones. The actual tone chosen would depend on the lighting in your dining room, your art, furniture and overall feeling you want to create in your home. If you prefer a quiet, more serene environment in your dining room than you will want to choose colors that compliment foods that you eat, yet, are more calming.
